Bathroom Remodeling

Getting ready to start remodeling our guest bathroom. Original idea was to just reface cabinets and paint but now that I have the bug, decided to pretty much tear out the entire room and start from scratch.. I'll keep you posted once I start.

Brick Pavers Add On

After completing the front porch we decided that we needed to add some brick pavers to the area where the mulch and stepping stones were. We found that when we parked our truck or car we were having to get out of the vehicle and step into the mulch so once again, wife found pavers on craigs list very reasonable and we set out to get them, loaded them in the back of the Tundra and then unloaded them. We then laid out a pattern that we both liked and figured out how much dirt we would have to move to make it work. After laying it out we figured we would make a 6 x 8 paver pad and then add a mulch bed around it to tie it into the existing edging.

And thus here the story begins...... Clearing the area, digging up roots, grass and mulch, leveling the area, tamping the area to get it as level as possible and then and only then were we ready to use the sand base etc. I read on one of the sites that the easiest way to level the sand base was to lay PVC pipe in the area the size that was needed to bring the pavers up to the height needed. So by leveling the pipe in the area to the height I needed I was able to use the pipe for screeding the sand. It worked very well. Once the sand was level and complete you just take the pipe out and fill the area before you start laying the brick. Since this is getting long I'll continue in the next blog......

Front Patio (Porch)

We picked up some Trex Composite decking from Craigslist from a man who had lots left over from a pool deck and got it for a steal. So with the amount of decking we had we decided to build the porch to fit the decking rather than the other way around. We figured out we could build an 8 x 18 foot porch on the front of our house and that would fit perfectly in to our plans.

Day one we did what most of us hate to do... Prepare the area! Dig out all the old plants, mulch and sod in order to frame in the area. We also had picked up from concrete deck blocks from another Craigs list purchase and decided to use them instead of completely leveling the area. Since we were using the blocks we decided to build the frame in sections and join the sections together in order to make sure it was all going to be level. As you can see from the picture the easy part was to come. Making sure the sections were level and at the right height was the most difficult.
Will continue next blog with more information and pics.

For the DIY woodworkers

This is a new Blog set up for the DIY woodworkers of the world. It is not for experienced craftsmen although their input may be beneficial but more so for the homeowner that has the willingness to tackle projects on their own.
Questions can be asked and answered as well as helpful hints and tips to make the projects go easier.

I recently just completed a free standing front porch on the front of our home and beginning in the next blog will start to tell the frustration as well as the joy of completion.
